Ingredients:
- 1 bowl chocolate cake batter made according to package directions from a standard (17 oz) store-bought package of cake mix
- 1 (7 oz) can light, real dairy whipped cream
- 1 (21 oz) jar sour cherries see recipe note below
- Chocolate sauce for drizzling
Instructions:
-
Make 6 waffles using the chocolate cake batter, according to your waffle maker’s instructions. I do about a ⅓ cup of batter for 3-4 minutes. If you have a waffle maker that makes larger waffles, adjust the amount of batter and cooking time, as necessary.
-
Allow the waffles to cool completely for about 5-10 miutes. It’s super important that you let the waffles cool, so that the whipped cream won’t melt when you stack your cake. You can also stick the waffles in the refrigerator in you’re short on time.
-
Once waffles are cool, put one waffle on a plate. Spray whipped cream around the outer edges of the waffle. Fill the the inside of the waffle with a 3-4 tablespoons of cherries. Top with another waffle.
-
Repeat step 3 with the remaining layers, including the top layer. Drizzle chocolate sauce on the top and around the plate. Enjoy!
Recipe Notes
If you can’t find jarred sour cherries, feel free to replace them with canned cherry pie filling.
You may need to tweak the ingredient amounts a little bit depending on what kind of waffle maker you’re using and the size of your waffles.
If you’re using a waffle maker similar to mine (makes 4 square waffles at a time), you should have enough batter to make 8 waffles. I like to make all 8 waffles and then choose the 6 prettiest ones for the cake… and eat the other 2! You can also attempt to make an 8 layer cake, but it will be less stable and easier to topple.
